Just over a third of adults in the region are in segments of the population where news interest is relatively low, whose information needs are well met in other ways, or hold personal values that don’t align with those of a public media news organization. It is possible that some of these might be reached by strategies designed with the other segments in mind.

GBH News already reaches half of the people in this one segment. While there is still work to be done among the other half, they are clearly reachable based on their news interests and profile. There is an opportunity here to increase the loyalty of those already engaging with us, and increase the proportion of those who turn to us for news.

There are three other segments, representing in the aggregate more than half of the total population, each of which includes people that GBH News could potentially reach through a combination of topical focus, distribution strategy, and messaging. Although the proportion of individuals in these segments naturally inclined toward public media journalism is smaller than in the greatest potential segment, the segments themselves are larger, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity for growth.
